SWANA Honors the Organic Resource Recycling Program at St. Peters, MO
I’m never surprised (anymore) about how long it takes from the first time I meet someone (like at a trade show or over the phone) until the time that they become an ECS Client. The average is somewhere around 2-4 years. For example, I met Russ Batzel, Manager, Public Works Services Group, St Peters MO, at a WEF Residuals Conference several years ago. We talked about life in Missouri (I’ve got family there), their existing composting operations and plans for future upgrades. I remember chatting about compost with Russ a couple years ago when he said, “…there is a tornado coming this way and I should leave now.”…and the line went dead. I was concerned for Russ of course, and remember thinking about tornadoes and self-turning compost piles.
This year ECS had the privilege of providing Russ, and the City of St Peters, MO with compost process design, equipment and services to upgrade their existing biosolids and yard waste compost facility. ECS provided our Standard Aerated Static Pile (ASP) system with a 30,000 ton/year capacity and with the following features: Reversing Aeration Direction (to de-stratify pile temperature profile); In-Floor Aeration (to capture/control Leachate/Condensate and for ease-of-use) and, a Bunker Wall Configuration (to share heat through the side walls and reduce the facility footprint).

Standard ASP with Reversing Aeration mounted to the back of the rear Push-Wall.

In-Floor Aeration collects Leachate/Condensate and directs it to a sump located before the fans. The design allows operators to load and unload the zones without concern for aeration system damage.
Bunker walls work well for conserving valuable process area and share heat from one vessel to another through the wall’s thermal mass.
Because of the City of St. Peters’s continued commitment to Organic Recycling, they have garnered another major honor for its Organic Resource Recycling Program. The Solid Waste Association of North America recently chose St. Peters the winner of the 2010 Gold Excellence Award in Composting.

Our heartfelt congratulations go out to the City of St Peters, Russ and all the staff.

"We were faced with landfill costs of more than $120,000 per year. Our woodchip cost is around $60,000 annually and we should see a revenue source on the end-product in the area of $30,000 per year. Aside from the fact that environmentally this is the right thing to do, we are saving on filling the landfill, greenhouse gas emissions and it is costing the user of our system far less by composting."Deborah PellowDirector of Wastewater Treatment PlantIshpeming, MI
