USCC CONFERENCE &TRADE SHOW

"Established in 1990, the US Composting Council (USCC) is the only national organization in the United States dedicated to the development, expansion and promotion of the composting industry. The USCC achieves this mission by encouraging, supporting and performing compost related research, promoting best management practices, establishing standards, educating professionals and the public about the benefits of composting and compost utilization, enhancing compost product quality, and developing training materials for compost manufacturers and markets for compost products."

This advanced workshop will cover how composting biology responds to process conditions inside the pile, and what operators can do to make improvements. It will include a not-too-technical discussion of research findings and mechanisms. We will review what is meant by BMP compliance, and how the range of BMP compliance impacts the biology using actual data from operating composting facilities.Furthermore, we will describe how operations and facility design contribute to BMP compliance. Finally, we’ll look at the economics of BMP compliance is discussed  to determine the right level of BMP compliance for specific composting facilities. The class includes an afternoon session where participants can share problems or issues ahead of time and Tim and Geoff can answer questions. This workshop is designed and most suitable for owners, operators, regulators and designers.

ECS Facility Audits – Designed to Help

COperators Meet Their Objectives

Compost operators face an ever-changing array of challenges including new regulations, closer neighbors, more difficult feedstocks, and evolving market demands.  Operators often do not have the time to gather data, analyze their processes, and formulate a strategic plan to address new challenges.  This is where ECS audit services come in.  We ask lots of questions to gain an understanding of your objectives, gather and analyze the necessary data and provide a menu of options from which operators and owners can choose solutions.

The ECS approach is science-based and technology-agnostic.  We begin by measuring key process indicators (KPI’s) in the mix, in the composting system itself, and in the piles.  We also interview the operators, hunt for inefficiencies, and catalog process outcomes such as compost stability, compost maturity, scale data, and air emissions. We use these data to understand and model the dynamic biological processes and determine which KPI’s are inhibiting the processes or contributing to inefficiencies.  Lastly, we provide a list of cost-weighted options to better optimize the facility to achieve the process and economic objectives identified by the client.
ECS recently performed an audit of a large ASP which was plagued by high air emissions and inconsistent end-product stability.  The ECS audit team measured: i) mix densities and moisture, ii) pile heights, temperatures, oxygen concentration, pH, and end product stability, iii) system air-flow rates and mal-distribution, and iv) VOC emission rates.  We found that the process was inhibited by high temperatures, pile compression, and a lack of water.  The top-rated improvements included adjusting the control settings on the existing aeration system, more effectively adding water, and changing pile geometries.  Our client rapidly implemented these low-cost steps to improve KPI’s thereby reducing process inhibitions and air emissions.
Please contact ECS for more information on our suite of technical services and to request an estimate for a facility audit at your location.
